  • The Tomb of Saint Francis underneath the basilica is inside a crypt chapel excavated from the distinctive pink rock of the mountains outside Assisi. A pillar of stone rises to the center of a dome; carved inside is the tomb of Saint Francis of Assisi. In front of the pillar is a small altar with simple candlesticks and a tabernacle depicting Saint Francis and Saint Clare kneeling before the Cross. Candles fill the tomb with peaceful, warm light.
