  • The interior of the Upper Church of the Papal Basilica of Saint Francis. In the foreground, an ornate altar is adorned with intricate patterns. Atop the altar, there is a large, elaborate crucifix flanked by two candle holders on each side. Behind the altar is the single nave, its lower walls painted by Giotto with the life cycle of Saint Francis of Assisi. Frescoes portraying the history of salvation color the highest section of the bays of the nave. The architecture includes pointed arches, columns, and vaulted ceilings with vibrant blue and gold stars. The floor is patterned with the characteristic pink stone of the nearby mountains. Centered in the background behind the altar's cross is the splendid rose window of the church façade.
